Making it Work: Painting a Wall in Simple Black

Black Wall Paint

Black Wall PaintOne of the easiest ways to add excitement to your home décor is by painting the walls in a new shade.  There are many bold designs which are considered stylish today, and painting walls black is among the hottest trends.  Black has always been a popular color used in interior design.  Black desks, couches, dining tables, and entertainment centers aren’t unusual.  Black walls, on the other hand, have a somewhat gothic reputation; but it’s a wall shade that can create elegance and even a calming ambiance, when matched with the right furnishings, lighting, and accessories.

Black is unlike trendy colors which tend to fall out of fashion.  Similar to the little black dress that’s a must-have in every woman’s closet, black walls don’t go out of style with the changing seasons.

The best way to use black paint most of the time is likely as an accent wall.  Experts suggest that you choose either the wall which frames the room’s centerpiece, such as the couch, or the longest wall.  The trim is most cases should contrast with the walls.

Black walls can go very well in bedrooms and living rooms.  Painting on a glossy finish and using generous lighting helps to add the stylish touch.  Use black more sparingly in the kitchen, painting no more than one wall.  In the bathroom, use black even more sparingly.

When you add furniture and accessories in whites, creams, and beiges against a black wall,  the result is a strong elegance factor.  Another possibility is to use flat black paint first and then add a graphic pattern in black paint that has sheen. Shades of Black

An exciting way to utilize black in the kitchen is with chalkboard paint.  Black chalkboard paint can be a lot of fun, and it looks stylish, even when kids add their doodles.  A chalkboard wall can even be used to keep the household organized.  Imagine kids checking off their chores for the day on a handy blackboard wall.  Or you could add a restaurant-like touch and write the daily menu in colored chalk.

If you consider black a bit risky, perform a test before painting your wall(s).  Paint a large poster with the black paint and either hold it up or attach it to your wall.  Observe how it looks at different times of the day, when the sun shines in, as well as how it looks by artificial light.  Design experts point out that halogen lights lend an accurate effect, as far as how the colors will appear, unlike incandescent light, which creates a yellowing effect.

Another approach for the doubtful is to start by painting small areas black.  Black paint in the bathroom, used with extreme moderation, can create a dynamic effect, against the backdrop of mirrors and chrome fixtures.  Another area to experiment with is in the built-in book shelves surrounding the fireplace.
