House Painting is Perfect for the Spring

Exterior House Paint PrepWhy do flowers burst out in Spring unlike any other time? It’s partly because it’s the season when outdoor conditions are ideal, and the same is true for exterior house painting. There is a lot to look forward to in Spring, particularly after a long, cold winter. But the best strategy a homeowner can have is to start with house painting and then move on to other things such as gardening projects, new landscaping, and outdoor sports. For several convincing reasons, late Spring is by far the best season for painting your home exterior.

If it is time for a fresh coat of exterior paint, meaning that the paint is at or near life expectancy, the least costly thing you can do is get it done sooner rather than later. When exterior paint begins to fail, it exposes wood to the elements. Wood begins to rot quickly without the protective covering that quality exterior paint provides. If you wait, expensive repairs may be needed before you can start painting. The mild weather of late spring provides the ideal environment for exterior paint to form the most protective and durable finish possible.

The following are more tips for achieving a professional finish on an exterior house painting job:

  • Watch the weather carefully so that you can avoid painting your home in the midst of weather events that will hinder the success of exterior painting. It’s best to postpone painting, if rain could interfere with the painting or drying process.
  • Surfaces that are exposed to direct sunlight can be as much as 10° to 20° hotter than temperature readings. If a mild day suddenly turns hot as you are painting your house, avoid painting on sunlit areas. Stay in the shade as you are painting, working your way around the home as needed. As you ensure a more durable paint job, you’ll have the added bonus of being more comfortable.
  • Excessively windy days should be avoided as much as hot, cloudless days, when you set out to paint your home’s exterior. Wind can have the same effect as the sun, drying latex paint too quickly. Wind can cause other kinds of trouble, as well. Contaminants such as dust can become imbedded in the paint due to the wind, which ultimately exposes the surface to destructive mildew.
  • The surface of your home needs to be properly prepared before you begin painting. Use a coat of primer to surfaces that haven’t been painted before and to surfaces where paint has worn away.
  • If you use the highest quality of 100% acrylic latex paint, your exterior paint job could last a decade or more. Less expensive paint, on the other hand, typically lasts only about four years. In the long run, it costs less to use the best paint in the first place.
  • Apply at least two coats of paint. This could be two coats of house paint or one coat each of primer and house paint.

exterior painting prepAfter your house painting is done, you can add new mulch around the house and do yard work to your heart’s content. The enjoyment you get out of your yard will only be enhanced by the beautiful new paint job on your home. If yard work isn’t what you look forward to in Spring, you’ll still no doubt enjoy your activities more, knowing your home has the protection it needs.
