Mistakes to Avoid for a Quality Exterior Paint Job that Will Last

exterior painting

exterior paintingMany of us have become accustomed to all kinds of instant gratification, from fast-food restaurants to electronics which keep us totally connected to the world in a moment’s time. But if there is ever an occasion in which to slow down and take care to get things right the first time, it’s when painting the exterior of a house. Prices of exterior paint have practically doubled since 1995, though technological advances also mean the paint lasts much longer, sometimes as many as 25 years. Here are a few mistakes to avoid when painting your home’s exterior, some of which so-called professionals have been known to errantly practice regularly in order to speed things up:

Mistake #1: Painting, priming, or caulking the same day the house is power-washed.

To ensure that products will adhere and bond as they are supposed to, it’s essential to allow between 24 and 48 hours for a house to dry after being power washed. Painting contractors who are in a rush to complete an exterior painting job routinely prime and caulk a house without waiting out the drying process, which will detract from the quality and durability of the entire project.

Mistake #2: Applying caulk over old caulk.

Applying caulk over aged caulk is not good, since separation has already taken place and will continue unless the old caulking is removed. Before exterior paint is applied, invest the time and remove old caulk first; then apply fresh caulk.

Mistake #3: Replacing the job of scraping with power washing.

Power washing is a necessary step which removes grime, dirt, and large pieces of peeling paint. Power washing should not be done too close to the home’s surface because it could damage the wood. A hand scraper should be used after power washing.

Mistake #4: Painting over bare wood with finish coat paint.

Exterior primers are designed to bond better with bare wood than with finish coats, and finish coats bond better with exterior primers than with bare wood. After cleaning and scraping the exterior, uniformly apply a nice, thick coat of exterior primer on all bare wood surfaces.

Mistake #5: Applying only one coat of exterior paint.Professional Paint Job

Most exterior paints contain instructions which say that two coats of paint should be applied. It’s a mistake to think that one coat is plenty, if the instructions say otherwise.

Mistake #6: Choosing to save money by doing a do-it-yourself exterior paint job.

Being in a hurry and trying to cut costs however possible are two things which don’t go well with doing an exterior paint project. Virtually the only advantage to a do-it-yourself paint job is saving money on the cost of the project. A professional house painting job will ensure a beautiful job on the house as well as insurance coverage if any mistakes are made. A large percentage of the people who set out to do a DIY paint job end up hiring a professional down the road. You can save time and frustration by hiring our professionals to tackle the job.
