Break free from the white frame of mind and update your home with a colorful stucco exterior.

There was a time when neither stucco nor brick were painted as a way of refreshing your home’s look.  Instead, there had to be a complete tear down and rebuild.  Those days are over.  It’s now possible to paint your brick and stucco structures and get excellent results.  All you need is the know-how to carry out the projects effectively and the tools and materials to get it done right.

Stucco Painting

Stucco is a popular building material in regions all across America.  It’s a remarkably durable and versatile building material.  With the popularity of stucco always changing, stucco painting is a way to rejuvenate your exterior without major construction.  Knowing how to paint stucco (or who to hire) greatly broadens your home updating and decorating options.

Here is a step-by-step guide to giving your stucco a fresh new look:

  • You need to start with a surface that’s paint-ready.  So the first order of business is to remove loose debris and dirt.  A wire brush is the right tool to use.  While you’re in this stage of the process, you may want to get a product which will clean the area of any stubborn stains.  There are some products designed for cleaning stucco which contain agents that will also help to prevent the growth of mildew.
  • Make sure the stucco is dry.  Stucco is porous, which means that if the surface is not prepared properly, the material will simply absorb all of your paint.  Use a moisture meter to measure the amount of moisture contained in the stucco you’re preparing to paint.  There should be less than 12% moisture in the stucco before you begin painting.
  • Use caulking or a joint compound to fill large cracks, holes, and voids in the stucco.
  • Always use a primer seal before painting.  Don’t be fooled into thinking that a combination primer/paint is a good choice—you would not be happy with the short-term results.
  • Choose a 100% acrylic high-quality flat paint.  In fact, you should get the highest quality paint available.  (Note: If the surface is seriously weathered or badly cracked, you will need to hire a professional painter to apply an elastomeric wall coating first.)
  • Spray on the primer and the paint and then back brush in order to achieve a nice, even coating of paint on the stucco.  Back-brushing is an essential step because it pushes the primer and paint into the surface, including the small holes and mortar joints, which results in an even finish.

Brick Painting

use brick or stucco painting to update your home

Update your fireplace with a fresh coat of paint.

  • Start by giving your fireplace a thorough cleaning.  Remove all dirt, dust, soot, and loose mortar from your bricks.  This step will ensure that the base coat of paint bonds well with the brick to give you lasting results.  You can use soap and water, household cleaners, or fireplace brick cleaner.  The latter is usually the advisable choice because the specially made product is designed to dissolve ash and creosote residue without using dangerous acids.
  • Tape off your fireplace and use a paint brush to paint a sealer/base coat on the brick and mortar.
  • Apply paint, and that’s about it.  Your bricks will have entirely new look.
