1. First, remove drawers and hardware. You’ll work on drawers separately, and hardware will be replaced once you’ve completed the paint job. To add greater depth to the fresh look you’re creating, it may help to get new hardware with a different style.

3. Now you’re ready to get into the nitty-gritty of the task, literally. Sand the furniture to remove all of the glossy finish. This will give new primer and paint a surface that can be grabbed onto. Start out with medium-grit sandpaper. The sanding that comes later, between coats, should be fine-grit. It’s unnecessary to completely strip the finish. If your plan is to paint, as opposed to stain, the furniture, your goal is to simply remove the glossy finish. If the surface has no shine to it, it’s okay to skip this step.
4. Next comes the primer. This step is important because primer will cover any stains on the piece or discolorations in the wood. You can use spray primer or apply it with a brush.
5. Sand…again. In order to achieve a professional-looking finish, it’s essential to lightly sand the piece using fine-grit sandpaper between every coat of primer or paint. The sanding dust needs to be carefully removed before continuing with the paint job; tack cloth works well for this purpose.
6. Apply a thin coat of paint. There are many types of paint that you can choose for your furniture. Interior latex paint with a semi-gloss finish works well, for example. The glossier finishes are the easiest to clean, but a glossy finish may not be the look you want. Choosing the paint and the brush or rollers you should use is something a professional can help you with.
7. Again, sand! After each and every coat of paint, sand with fine-grit paper and then remove the dust.
8. Paint a second and perhaps a third coat of paint.
9. Allow your last coat of paint to dry for at least 24 hours; more time may be required in a humid environment. Once the paint is completely dry, seal it. By sealing the furniture, you protect the finish and create a surface that’s much easier to wipe clean. 10. Let the piece sit untouched for a day or two, to ensure that the finish isn’t compromised. Then all that’s left is to add the hardware.
